Drawn to Mildura for its strong agricultural base and practical learning opportunities, Dupinderjeet found the transition smoother thanks to family already living in the region.
“Having family here helped me settle in quickly,” he says. “Mildura’s connection to horticulture and agribusiness made it the perfect place to study and grow.”
Originally from Punjab, a region known for its rich farming culture, Dupinderjeet’s interest in agriculture was sparked early.
“Growing up surrounded by agriculture inspired me to learn how modern agribusiness combines science, management, and sustainability,” he explains.
His studies at La Trobe have taken him beyond the classroom and he’s committed to weekly travel to La Trobe’s Bundoora campus to undertake specialised face to face subjects that have offered a broader perspective.
“Even though it’s a long journey, I enjoy learning from both city and regional viewpoints,” he says.
One of the highlights of his academic experience has been his placement with Southern Cross Farms, a leading horticultural enterprise in the region.
“It was one of the most rewarding parts of my studies,” Dupinderjeet shares. “I worked closely with professionals in large-scale operations involving almonds, citrus, and table grapes.”
During his placement, he gained hands-on experience in irrigation scheduling, soil and moisture monitoring, pest control, crop forecasting, and harvest planning. He also contributed to yield estimation projects and saw firsthand how data and technology drive farm performance.
“It gave me a deeper understanding of how agronomy, finance, and operations come together in modern agribusiness,” he says.
Beyond the technical skills, Dupinderjeet values the welcoming and peaceful environment Mildura offers.
The community here is incredibly supportive, especially in the agriculture sector,” he notes. “What surprised me most was how many professional opportunities exist for students in regional Victoria.”
With one year left in his degree, Dupinderjeet is already looking ahead.
“I definitely want to stay and work in Mildura after graduation,” he says. “The agricultural diversity and supportive community make it an ideal place to build a meaningful career.”
His long-term goal is to contribute to sustainable and innovative farming practices in regional Australia.
“I want to keep learning and play a role in shaping the future of agriculture,” he says.
“Mildura has truly become home,” he reflects. “I hope my story inspires other international students to consider studying and working in regional Australia — the experiences and networks you gain here are truly life-changing.”
