Gestational weight gain guidelines

A new study has explored how gestational weight gain guidelines are applied in Australian midwifery practice.

New research from Helen Nightingale, Lecturer in Midwifery, has highlighted inconsistencies in how gestational weight gain guidelines are applied in Australia.

“Gaining too much weight during pregnancy can have serious effects on the health of both mother and baby,” Helen explains. “Midwives play a critical role in supporting healthy weight gain, yet little is known about how current guidelines are used in everyday practice.”

The study sought to address this gap by looking at how guidelines are implemented in midwifery practice.

“We found that gestational weight gain guidelines are being applied inconsistently. This was influenced by how well midwives understood their role, how familiar they were with the recommendations, and the perceived value of providing gestational weight gain care.”

Helen says the findings offer valuable insights for improving antenatal care.

“The study highlights the need to strengthen midwives’ confidence, knowledge and communication skills, while providing the support needed for respectful and effective care.”
