Professor Bec Strating, Director of La Trobe Asia, has been recognised with a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship.
An expert in maritime security and international politics, Professor Strating’s fellowship will take place in the United States where she will be hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington DC.
“The Fulbright Scholarship is a respected and distinguished award and I am honoured to be a recipient,” says Professor Strating. “It provides a fantastic opportunity to research and grow my expertise in the United States, and I look forward to working with colleagues at CSIS.”
A respected voice in her field, Professor Strating has led over 20 externally funded research collaborations worth more than $2 million. She currently leads the DFAT-funded “Blue Security” network focused on maritime security issues in the Indo-Pacific.
Professor Strating has extensive experience working in the field of international diplomacy and security. Her research focuses primarily on Asian regional security, maritime disputes, and Australian foreign and defence policy. She is the author of ‘Girt by Sea: reimagining Australia’s Security’ (La Trobe University Press/Black Inc, 2024), and co-editor of 'Blue Security: Maritime Strategies in the Indo-Pacific' (Routledge, 2024, forthcoming).
Now in its 75th year, the Australian-American Fulbright Commission offers scholarships to Australian citizens across all career stages. Recipients take part in an academic and cultural exchange at a US institution, experiencing life abroad and bringing back their knowledge and experience to share with their communities.
