Vis East Moot success

La Trobe Law School's Vis East Moot team has finished in the top 16, making them the highest-ranking Australian team in the competition

La Trobe’s Vis East Moot team have finished competing in Hong Kong in one of the largest and most prestigious international commercial arbitration moots in the world.

The result: The team finished in the top 16 out of 145 law schools, making them the highest-ranking Australian team in the competition.

Hundreds of universities compete in the Vis East Moot each year. The competition features a mock arbitration, requiring students to research international commercial arbitration and the international sale of goods. After receiving a problem, each team prepares and submits a memorandum for claimant and a memorandum for respondent.

Oral hearings too place in Hong Kong between 10-17 March 2024.

The team also received several other awards including an Honourable Mention for the best written memorandum for claimant, an Honourable Mention for the best written memorandum for respondent, and Honourable Mentions for the best individual oral advocate to Elly-May Dreier and Shaun James.

"The Law School couldn't be prouder of the team,” says Dean of the La Trobe Law School, Professor Fiona Kelly. “They have put in countless hours over many months to perfect their arguments. To come away with so many awards is wonderful recognition of their effort and skill. I have no doubt that other students who have followed their journey will be inspired to take part in future years."

The team included Elly-May Dreier, Shaun James, Christina Mikhael, Alex Vander, Ryan Gambin, Flinn Olarenshaw and Emma Hollis and was coached by Kirtan Swamy.
