Solving industry challenges with research grants

Cooperative Research Centres Projects (CRC-P) Round 16 grant applications are now open until 5 June 2024, with Round 17 expected to open in late 2024. Industry partners are encouraged to consider the funding scheme, as it provides a strategic opportunity to enhance operational capacity, increase resource allocation, and collaborate with La Trobe to effectively leverage research and development funds.

Grant applications for CRC-Ps are industry-university collaborations of short-term projects (up to three years) that focus on developing essential new technologies, products, and services. The funding available for CRC-P projects is matched, with a minimum grant amount of $100,000 and a maximum of $3 million. On average, successful grants receive around $2 million in funding.

We encourage industry partners to take a keen interest in the CRC-P funding scheme. It serves as a valuable vehicle for industry players to scale-up operations, increase resourcing and partner with La Trobe to leverage research and development funds, helping achieve practical outcomes in their business and respective sectors.

In 2023 VivaZome Therapeutics secured a $3 million CRC-P grant from the Australian Government for their three-year project on customised exosomes in regenerative medicine. For the project they are collaborating with La Trobe University, as well as The University of Queensland, Australian National University, Cytiva, and SeerPharma12.

Successful CRC-P projects also contribute to establishing a solid industry-university partnership, adding major credibility that enhances the prospect of securing larger and more complex funding schemes.

To be eligible, CRC-P applicants must include at least two Australian industry organisations, with one being a small to medium-sized enterprise (SME), as well as one research organisation.

With these criteria in mind, La Trobe University has world-leading capabilities and applied research expertise in our core research pillars of agrifood, biotech/biomed, digital, health and wellbeing, digital health and regional development.

Furthermore, recently funded CRC-P projects have included significant teaching and research-training opportunities. With Industry PhDs, work-based learning, short courses and more, La Trobe University's diverse education offering is tailored to industry needs.

By embracing the possibilities offered by CRC-P grants, industry partners can drive innovation, solve industry-specific challenges, and ultimately enhance their competitive edge in the Australian market.
