La Trobe celebrates CUC Mallee opening

La Trobe University recently joined Country Universities Centre (CUC) to celebrate the official opening of the new CUC Mallee in Swan Hill.

The new Swan Hill centre will allow La Trobe University students studying online in the region, to access the site and support services on offer.  There are close to 150 La Trobe University online students living in the Swan Hill region.

CUC Mallee is the fourth Regional University Study Hub in regional Victoria.  Each CUC is community-owned and operated by a local volunteer Board. The CUCs provide regionally based university students with a well-equipped facility that offers quiet study spaces, breakout rooms, high-speed internet, physical infrastructure and face-to-face academic and wellbeing student services from local staff.

La Trobe University and CUC signed a memorandum of understanding in 2023 to enhance the future of regional study and was represented at the CUC Mallee opening by teams from the Bendigo and Mildura campuses.  La Trobe also has physical campuses in Albury-Wodonga and Shepparton.

La Trobe Pro Vice-Chancellor (Regional), Associate Professor Melanie Bish welcomed the opening of the new regional university study hub in Swan Hill, reinforcing La Trobe’s partnership and shared vision.

“By combining our resources and expertise, we can empower rural students, facilitate access to higher education and ultimately, make a lasting impact on their lives.

“We have contacted our students based within a 100Km radius of Swan Hill encouraging them to take advantage of the support services and space available to them at CUC Mallee.  The site will also provide a great base for La Trobe students on placement in the region.

“I’m also thrilled that the CUC Mallee facility will equip our students with a physical space in Swan Hill, allowing them more easily create networks and friendships between their fellow La Trobe students and students from other universities.”
