A La Trobe University researcher will travel to the United Kingdom to present their work to the Annual Meeting of the British Pharmacology Society in the UK.

Dr Maria Jelinic was the overall winner of the Inaugural Bellberry New Investigator Award in Sydney at the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists 2023 Annual Scientific Meeting.

Dr Jelinic is a Senior Lecturer in Human Physiology at La Trobe and was recognised for her research, which examines developing a new pre-clinical model of metabolic syndrome for testing pharmacotherapies and beyond.

The Bellberry New Investigator Awards highlight the research contributions of new investigators in the disciplines of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Dean of the School of Agriculture, Biomedicine and Environment, Professor Shaun Collin, congratulated Dr Jelinic on her achievement.

"Maria is an innovative and outstanding researcher, we are proud to have her represent SABE and all of La Trobe on the world stage," Professor Collin said.

Dr Jelinic said she hoped her research would provide new solutions to the leading causes of cardiovascular disease, such as hypertension, obesity and diabetes, health issues that impact many Australians.

“I am excited for the opportunity to promote my research to a global audience and share my research discoveries to date,” she said.

“My goal is to develop better therapies for patients suffering from cardiovascular disease and connecting with peers overseas is another step towards making this a reality.”

Dr Jelinic will travel to the UK in December 2024.
