Sara Carr chose La Trobe’s Bachelor of Education because of its focus on evidence-based teaching.

“I chose La Trobe because of the Science of Language and Reading (SOLAR) Lab. I knew the course would include evidence-based methods for teaching reading,” she says.

“In addition to learning more about the science of reading, I have enjoyed learning about the science of learning, where we use findings from cognitive science and other disciplines to try to ensure our teaching is as effective and efficient as possible.”

Now in her third year, Sara has chosen to specialise in inclusive education.

“In my role as a teacher's aide, I have supported children who struggled in many areas of school and I always wished that I knew more to help them. I chose to specialise in inclusive education so that I can learn more about supporting these children.”

Sara completed two primary school placements where she got first-hand experience and guidance from mentor teachers.

“During placement, I taught lessons, prepared lesson aids, wrote lessons, undertook assessments, and got experience managing classroom behaviour,” she says.

“I loved observing the students learn and building on that learning. It was also great to implement different ideas and techniques and receive feedback from a mentor teacher.”

After graduating, Sara is looking forward to being in the classroom.

“I am looking forward to putting what I’ve learned into practice. I would love to work in a primary school that values evidence-based teaching and the science of learning.”
