Combining commerce and law

Aspire student, Isabel Taylor, is studying a Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Bachelor of Commerce degree

Meet Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Bachelor of Commerce student Isabel Taylor.

"The reason that I chose to study both Commerce and Law at La Trobe is because I have a passion for understanding the rationale behind everyday business and legal procedures. I enjoy the strategic decision-making side of businesses as well as unravelling complex legal problems."

Isabel began her journey at La Trobe as an Aspire student, an early entry program that recognises students’involvement in community, leadership and volunteering.

"The Aspire program, being unique to La Trobe, stood out to me as it emphasises a holistic view of a student's capabilities beyond just academic achievements.”

Isabel's experiences at La Trobe span across all aspects of student life.

"For the past three years, I’ve been actively involved with the La Trobe Law Students’ Association. This year, I have the privilege of being elected Vice-President (Treasurer), a role that offers me valuable insights into the operational dynamics of the Association,” she shares.

“My engagement extended to various competitions too. I reached the semi-finals in the Law Students’ Association Witness Examination Competition and, with a teammate, won the grand final of the Client Interview Competition.”

Isabel also completed a placement at Whittlesea Community Connections Legal Service within the Fines and Civil Actions team. There, she honed her skills in client interviewing and drafting correspondence to clients, Fines Victoria, and VicRoads.

After graduation, Isabel aims to merge both sides of her degree in a commercial law setting.

"I aspire to join a commercial firm at the conclusion of my studies, where I can apply both my analytical and problem-solving skills. My goal is to work on challenging international deals, leveraging my knowledge from La Trobe to drive profitable outcomes and achieve strategic business objectives.”
