La Trobe University soars to its best overall UniSport Nationals Championship result

La Trobe University has continued to state its credentials as a rising force within the Australian university sport landscape after recording its first ever top 10 placing in the overall UniSport Nationals Championship.

Out of a total of 42 UniSport Australia member universities, Team La Trobe finished in eighth place in the 2023 overall UniSport Nationals Championship, rising five spots on our 13th place finish in 2022. La Trobe was also the third highest ranked university from the UniSport Australia South Region, which comprises of 13 universities from Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

The UniSport Nationals Championship sees universities compete head-to-head in a number of national-standard sporting competitions - including the flagship UniSport Nationals event - as well as a number of other standalone national sporting championships across the calendar year. The combined results from across 70 contributing pennant competitions held throughout the year go towards the overall UniSport Nationals Championship standings.

Team La Trobe’s record finish came on the back of claiming gold medals in the Women’s Beach Volleyball (main picture above), Men’s Basketball and Women’s Basketball Division 1 pennants and a bronze medal in Women’s Netball Division 2 pennant at the UniSport Australia Nationals on the Gold Coast in September.

Other notable achievements on the Gold Coast included fourth placed finishes in Women’s Fencing, Men’s Soccer, Men’s Judo, Mixed Netball and Men’s Taekwondo.

La Trobe Sport’s Senior Coordinator for Representative and High Performance Sport Emily Harbrow said the top 10 placing in the UniSport Nationals Championship standings had capped off a wonderful year for Team La Trobe.

“The results that we have been able to achieve this year is a credit to the skill and commitment of our student athletes who have represented Team La Trobe proudly on the national stage,” she said.

“A lot of hard work has been invested in recent years to develop a high-performing and connected Team La Trobe culture that the university can be proud of. A top 10 finish this year, in addition to our Women’s Basketball team claiming their second national University Basketball League championship in a row earlier this year, shows we are starting to reap the rewards of that hard work.

“Thanks to our La Trobe Sport staff, our band of wonderful Team La Trobe coaches and team managers and our affiliated sport clubs for their work in supporting our student athletes to achieve this fantastic result.”
