La Trobe Sports Park Stadium to receive grandstand finish

Works to install a 1100-seat retractable grandstand will commence at the La Trobe Sports Park Stadium next week as the premier sporting precinct in Melbourne’s North increases its capacity to host major community sport events.

La Trobe University has contracted stadia and arena seating supplier Starena Group to deliver the project, which is expected to take eight weeks to complete.

The grandstand will deliver flexible indoor spectator seating for large-scale events, which will further improve the state-of-the-art stadium’s ability to welcome the local community onto the campus as a place to socialise and stay healthy in line with La Trobe’s University City of the Future vision.

La Trobe Sport Senior Operations Coordinator Jai Haddock said the installation of the retractable grandstand would ensure the La Trobe Sports Park could expand its capability to accommodate a wide range of events.

“Since its inception at the start of 2019, the La Trobe Sports Park has offered a unique environment to play, teach and research sport,” he said.

“With the addition of the retractable grandstand within the La Trobe Sports Park Stadium, alongside the unveiling of the world-class Home of the Matildas facilities earlier this year, the Sports Park will now also offer a premium environment to watch sport and other high-calibre community events.

“Once completed, the improved seating will only enhance the Sports Park’s ability to attract and host state and national-level sporting events, while also retaining the ability to cater for the needs of our local community user groups and tenants within the Sports Park.”

Works are scheduled to commence from Monday 27 November through to Friday 19 January. Patron and user group access to Court Hall 1 will be impacted with Courts 1 and 2 to be unavailable for the duration of the works, while Court 3 will be available outside of construction times post 5:00pm from Monday to Friday and on Sundays. There will be no impact to use of the courts in Court Hall 2 (Courts 3, 4 and 5) during the construction phase.

La Trobe Sport has worked closely with its regular user groups and Sports Park tenants in recent months to manage programming over the grandstand installation period, with the view of reducing the impact the court closures will have on casual use or any planned bookings.
