In mid-March, more than 200 alumni, industry partners, emeriti and adjunct professors, and current Law School staff came together to celebrate the 30th anniversary of La Trobe University Law School at a special event held in the Conversation Quarter at the State Library of Victoria.
Law School alumni spent the evening reconnecting with classmates and building relationships with others who also started their legal careers at La Trobe.
Guests were welcomed by Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Dewar AO and Dean of the Law School, Professor Fiona Kelly. The event also featured alumni guest speakers, Dan Creasey (Bachelor of Law (Hons) 2004), Director of Responsible Business at King & Wood Mallesons, and Kobra Moradi (Bachelor of Laws (Hons), 2018), lawyer at the Australian Centre for International Justice. Dan spoke of his involvement in King & Wood Mallesons’s social impact practices and vision of building strong communities where young people thrive. Kobra talked of her current research in transitional justice in Afghanistan as a Fellow at the University of Melbourne. Both alumni shared reflections about their legal careers and spoke fondly of the ways in which the La Trobe Law School’s values of service, justice and academic excellence have shaped their careers.
Since opening its doors in 1992, La Trobe Law School has lived up to its ‘reaching out and welcoming in’ culture. Professor Fiona Kelly says it is a culmination of being purpose-driven by their values and the school’s “focus on innovation, diversity, and change”. This has led to the Law School’s strong connection to local communities through the provision of legal aid services and non-legal advocacy, as well as welcoming in a diverse range of students from across the country.
"It was a wonderful evening of rekindling connections and celebrating our School's history," said Professor Kelly.
"We had alumni from the very first class in 1992, through to 2022 graduates who just this week commenced their Graduate programs in Melbourne law firms and government departments."
