Student awards showcase innovation

Our 30th Anniversary Engineering and IT Showcase featured our most outstanding final year student projects, delivered in partnership with industry and government agencies

The School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences hosted its 30th Anniversary Engineering and IT Showcase on 24 November 2022.

Over 300 guests – including staff, students, alumni, industry and schools – came to see the School’s most outstanding final year student projects, delivered in partnership with industry and government agencies.

The keynote speaker was Evan Davey, a La Trobe alumnus and founding partner of Two Bulls, a Digital Product Consultancy.  Over 13 years, Evan has grown Two Bulls from a team of five to over 135+ across Australia and New Zealand, and now heads up Growth for Two Bulls.

"This event celebrates the great achievements of our Engineering and IT students in delivering technological solutions in close collaboration with our local industry and business," says Professor Wenny Rahayu, Dean of the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences.

"It was amazing to see the outstanding projects on display, and to listen to the inspiring journey of one of our own alumni."

The School awarded the following prizes.

School prizes

Provost commercial incentive award
Sawal Keshar Khatri (Department of Engineering), ‘Strength and serviceability behaviour of 3D printed fibre reinforced polymer coupons with various reinforcement ratios’.

3D printing of strong, durable and corrosion resistant fibre reinforced polymer is more efficient than traditional manufacturing. Complex structure, joints, and members can also be printed with ease the help of 3D printing. This project examined the strength and serviceability behaviour of 3D printed fibre reinforced polymer coupons.

This award was sponsored by the Office of the Provost at La Trobe University.

Dean’s award for the most outstanding leadership contribution by a female in a project team
Crystal George and Kenisa Bangera (Department of Computer Science and Information Technology), ‘Staff engagement, visualisation and experience engine’.

Using a mobile application, this system collects feedback from staff on how they are doing/feeling about their projects and how their projects are progressing (both client and Planit projects).

This project was sponsored by Planit, a software company that helps businesses efficiently deliver their technological vision by assuring quality, mitigating tasks, and enhancing digital experience.

This award was sponsored by the Dean of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences.

Engineering prizes

These awards were sponsored by the Department of Engineering.

Best robotic systems design project
Nicolas Dobricic and Wenlong Wu, ‘Robotic testing and sorting system’.

This system uses two separated carousel style inputs that feed into a gravity-fed ramp. Once dispensed, objects travel down the ramp and are intersected by two retaining arms at which point they are scanned for colour and height. The object is then released by the retaining arms and continues to travel down the ramp until the object is intersected by its relevant gate and ejected into the appropriate bin.

Best Engineering poster
Darcy Carroll, on improving the first type of turnout assembly through the introduction of lean principles. This project was sponsored by Vossloh Cogifer Australia.

Best Engineering project
Manuel Diaz Fernandez, on low-light video image processing and enhancement.

Computer Science and Information Technology prizes

These awards were sponsored by the Department of Computer Science an Information Technology.

Project academic award
Gerry Korfiatis

Top project for technical innovation
Ali Mohammed Sulaim, Hamza Shaikh, Duc Hung Tran, Alex McCoy and James Worcester, ‘Top Project Implementation’.

Top cybersecurity industry project
Ronan Larmane, Justin Nguyen, Vansh Prashar, Vivianne Ton and Vadhana Anil Ram), ‘Threat hunting using open-source intelligence’.

Open-source intelligence (OSINT)can tell us a great deal about the threats posed to an organisation. Malicious actors can take advantage of OSINT to inform and direct attacks against the organisation. This project has identified what OSINT exists in the University environment.

This project was sponsored by Information Services at La Trobe University and the award was sponsored by PNORS Technology Group.
