Returning from Europe

For an early-career researcher (ECR), making time to meet other scientists, creating networks and sharing ideas can be as important as spending time in the lab and writing up results. The last few years of COVID related lock-downs have prevented many ECRs from having that opportunity.

As face-to-face conferences return, LIMS is committed to ensuring our ECRs and HDRs have ample opportunity to travel to conferences – both internationally and domestically.

In first half of this year LIMS awarded 12 LIMS International Travel Fellowships – and we have just announced applications are open for Round 2 of the Travel Fellowships.

One of the recipients from Round 1 of the LIMS ECR International Travel Fellowship, awarded in May, is already back from her conference in Lyon, France.

Wasting no time putting her funds to use, Dr Christina Nedev attended the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) annual conference in Lyon.

Having recently moved into the study of extracellular vesicles (EVs), Dr Nedev was keen to network with others in the field. ‘I was able to meet with overseas collaborators and form new networks with other scientists I would not have otherwise had the opportunity to do,’ said Christina.

‘I was able to learn new ideas from these researchers and have already begun applying them to my work back at LIMS. These interactions have helped solve issues I’ve previously had with some of my experiments.’

Dr Nedev is quick to realise the benefit of travelling to conferences and establishing connections with those in her field. Not only does it enable ECRs to get to know the research being done globally but it also ‘helps with future job prospects and broadens the scope of opportunities.’

If you’re an ECR or HDR at LIMS you are strongly encouraged to apply for one of the LIMS Travel Fellowships.
