Partnering industry with cybersecurity and IT talent

In 2021 La Trobe University was awarded $2.35 million by the Commonwealth Government, under the Australian Government’s Cyber Security Skills Partnership Innovation Fund, to partner with industry to lift Australia’s cyber security capability.

The project, ‘The partnership for new cyber security professionals, skills and employment’, joins La Trobe with industry leaders Cisco, Quantum Victoria, Optus, Wiley, Practera, GHD, War on Wasted Talent to help create career-ready professionals through industry placements and work experience programs, micro-credentialled learning for upskill and reskill career-changers, current cyber professionals and employers; as well as raising awareness about cyber security skills and training opportunities for high-school students

Our program with partner Practera is focused on pairing industry with student placements and work experience programs. Currently underway is the placement of 25 cybersecurity students from both undergraduate and postgraduate level with companies like NQRY, Travengers Au and Meaningful Ageing Australia from a range of industries like aged care and health, travel, and public safety, to assist with cybersecurity projects.

Students work between approximately 240 hours over 12 to 20 weeks and undertake tasks to improve and help business outcomes like, reviewing cyber security practices, raising awareness, assisting organisations with their data protection/data security, upskilling and retraining organisational staff with the current cybersecurity industry standards.

The cybersecurity initiative represents the effective ways that higher education can work with a group of leading industry organisations, through pooling of resources, skills and expertise, to address workforce needs. While also partnering to capitalise on La Trobe’s position as a sector leader in both cyber security education and research innovation.

Applications are now open for summer industry placements that would take place from Monday 21 November 2022 to 11 February 2022. Organisations with a cybersecurity challenge or opportunity that would benefit for engaging with La Trobe’s exceptional student talent are encouraged to apply.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss the process is more detail, please contact Catherine Klimeš at accelerator@latrobe.edu.au
