One of the largest cycling events in Australia, the Autumn Cycling Classic is hosted by the Northern Combine (via the Preston Cycling Club) in partnership with La Trobe University.
This year’s event will take place on Saturday 28 May and will host hundreds of elite, junior and recreational riders at La Trobe University’s three-kilometre-long closed circuit Ring Road course on the Bundoora Campus.
The Autumn Cycling Classic made a highly successful return in 2021 after missing 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and according to Preston Cycling Club President, Angelo Sirianni, plans are in place to make this year’s edition of the event the biggest and best yet.
“With a beautiful campus and closed roads in Melbourne, the event facilitates safe and accessible opportunities for both cyclists and the local community to participate in a road race,” Sirianni said.
“The University’s support of this event and the fantastic and safe course the Bundoora Campus enables the Northern Combine together with the Preston Cycling Club to attract more riders and therefore host more grades of racing; meaning all riders, from novices to elite, juniors and seniors will have a race to suit them. This year we are expecting over 300 participants to take part in the event.”
For the Preston Cycling Club, hosting the Autumn Cycling Classic takes on extra significance with the club celebrating its centenary anniversary this year.
“The club is excited about being given the opportunity to host this signature event on our Centenary year and conduct a road race in the vicinity of our club and our membership base,” Sirianni said.
“It is rare to find a closed circuit the distance of the Bundoora Campus Course anywhere in Melbourne.”
The Autumn Cycling Classic reflects La Trobe’s commitment to hosting events that promote physical and mental health and wellbeing, as well as providing opportunities for the local community to enjoy the world class sport and recreation facilities on the picturesque Bundoora Campus.
