Aeterna Health joins La Trobe’s Research and Innovation Precinct

The Research and Innovation Precinct welcomes new precinct partner, Aeterna Health, to La Trobe’s Bundoora Campus.

Aeterna Health is a regenerative and preventative medicine company specialising within the field of immunotherapy - assisting the body’s immune system to fight disease and cancer. Aeterna work extensively with Victoria’s major health providers and research institutes to translate scientific discoveries into clinical practice. Focused on delivering cutting edge cell biotechnology in partnerships with leading research institutes in Germany, Australia, China and the United States, Aeterna will continue their clinical research into cell therapies, immune cells and the immune system at the Precinct.

Aeterna scientists will be co-located in laboratories in the RL Reid Building, working alongside researchers from La Trobe’s School of Agriculture, Biomedicine and Environment.

Lead scientist, Dr Afsar Ahmed is excited to return to La Trobe. After completing his PhD studies in Molecular Biology at La Trobe, Dr Ahmed has been continuing his research exploration in both academic and biotech sectors for more than 15 years focusing on innate immunity, inflammatory diseases, cancer biology and most recently immune cell therapy.

“We see our move to La Trobe as the most thrilling step for Aeterna Health to move forward with its vision in immunotherapy along with a deeper engagement with La Trobe in the future. And we believe this collaboration will be mutually productive and beneficial.”

Dr Darren Coomber, Strategic Relationship Manager, La Trobe University said “Aeterna are such an important partner and a great fit with La Trobe, their research aligns with our own strengths in immunology and exosomes and with our Research Theme - Understanding and Preventing Disease.”
