Studying Social Work more flexible to meet workforce demands

Mildura students studying Social Work at La Trobe University will benefit from a flexible delivery of the course, allowing them to manage work and family commitments more easily.

With an increased demand in the community for degree-qualified Social Workers, La Trobe has made the changes in response to feedback from local industry.

The course is now delivered via a mixture of online and face-to-face classes.  Dr Sean MacDermott, Senior Lecturer in Social Work and Social Policy, says he hopes the flexibility will encourage more people in the community to upskill.

“At a fulltime study load, classes have been timetabled into two days, across every year level of the degree. This means students can more easily meet work and family demands, outside of their class days.  We’re also delivering more classes online during the first and second years of the degree, giving students more flexibility at the beginning of their course, but still building in face-to-face classes, to ensure they maintain connection to fellow students and staff on campus.

“Lastly, those skill-based class in the third and fourth year of the degree, will still be delivered face-to-face.  This is in response to feedback from the local industry, which felt these subjects are required to be delivered in person, so students can meet expectations once they go out on placement.”

Simone Heald, CEO of Sunraysia Community Health Services (SCHS) and member of La Trobe Mildura's Regional Advisory Board, welcomed the changes and said qualified staff are essential to meeting the community’s welfare needs.

“As a rural health service, Sunraysia Community Health Services welcomes flexible learning opportunities.  The opportunity for students to commence gaining qualifications through SuniTAFE and then continue to build on their knowledge, skills and expertise through further university study, enhances the individual, our organisations and the service provided to the community."
