Mental health qualifications now more accessible than ever

As we respond to the challenges of a changing world, mental health is in the spotlight.  All elements of our healthcare system urgently need professionals with skills and expertise to promote individual and community mental health.  La Trobe’s online mental health courses are opening up opportunities for professionals to equip themselves with the skills they need to face their growing community health concern.

A paediatric nurse by background, Cate Charles says she pursued studying a Master of Mental Health Nursing to better address mental health in her every day work.

“I have always been involved in diverse communities and my job for the last six years has been working as a nurse with international students.  I have wanted the education and skills to better understand, assess and support young students through this journey of mental health crisis and illness.

Cate says she is enjoying the course and the online study experience.

“I am enjoying the readings, the practical reflections and activities and that each course addresses a variety of topics within the main theme.  I think it is very stimulating and challenges me to think and reflect in new ways.  I don’t even mind the assessments for the most part!  It is easier to manage studying online when working full time.”

Joseph Asirifi, originally from Ghana, Africa, has had a diverse career and is now passionate about pursuing a career in mental health.  He has completed the Graduate Certificate in Mental Health and is now enrolled to start the Master of Mental Health.

“I joined the Ghana Army after my high school and within the ten years I participated in several United Nation Peacekeeping Operations including twice in Lebanon, Israel, Liberia, and Rwanda.  I then travelled to China after I resigned from the Army as an English Teacher and continued in Thailand and South Korea, before coming to Australia in 2016.

Joseph says whilst studying online was a learning curve at first, he is now enjoying the experience.

“The way Dr Phil Maude conducts the course, sharing his enormous experience, is really interesting. He has a story to tell at every question anyone asks and elaborates more with his own experience.  It makes each lesson very engaging.

“I am so excited I have been able to complete Graduate Certificate in Mental Health and am now enrolled to do the Masters. I know this is going to help me in my next career, as a Chaplain in Australia Defence Force - of which I can't wait.
