Following the successful virtual challenges last year in the the Campus-to-Campus Challenge and the Walk and Run Hunt, Team La Trobe set out to create an in-person charity walk and run event in October 2021.
Unfortunately, due to the current circumstances in Victoria, we were unable to go ahead with the event, paving the way for another virtual challenge to keep the community physically active and engaged.
For the month of October, participants will be given a daily walk or run target each day correlating with a cancer statistic. Participants will need to download and register with the Nike Run Club app (on the App Store or Google Play) and send a friend request to Team La Trobe to record the distance they cover each day. La Trobe Sport will then be able to share the progress of the event as well as highlighting the achievements of participants to encourage conversation, motivation and connection.
As part of the challenge, Team La Trobe encourages participants to raise funds for the Olivia Newton John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre, who provide wellness and supportive care programs for cancer patients.
The challenge that is presented by Team La Trobe is timely, as October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While the challenge focuses on all types of cancers, breast cancer is one of Australia’s most common types of cancers and can be treated successfully if found early. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the first week of the challenge will be themed around breast cancer statistics.
The ONJ Cancer Wellness & Research Centre has been a staple piece of our community since 2012 and aims to save the lives of thousands of Australians each year. You can donate to the Team La Trobe fundraising page here.
An ONJ Cancer Wellness & Research Centre Challenge Facebook event page has been created for all participants to join to keep up to date with the daily targets and share their videos and images of their experiences. A range of prizes will be available for participants who are most active in this challenge.

How long does the challenge run for?

How do I track my distance (via the Nike Run Club app)?
When you are ready to start your run or walk, just hit start on the Nike Run Club app home screen and set off on your walk/run.
When you finish your walk/run, hold down the pause button until the stop button appears. Press the stop button to complete your walk/run in the app.
Do I have to be a La Trobe Student or Staff member to participate?
No, you do not need to be a Staff member or Student to participate. We welcome all people from the community to join!
How does the challenge work?
Each day we will provide participants with a statistic, which will then correlate to a walk/ run goal for that day. Open up the NRC app, start your run/ walk and try to complete the target.
Why is La Trobe Sport running this event?
After last years successful virtual run/ walk challenges, we set out to create a physical, on campus event to bring the community together. Unfortunately, this year hasn’t gone to plan, so we are offering the Team La Trobe community another interactive virtual participation event.
Why is the Olivia Newton John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre the chosen charity?
The ONJ Centre is a staple piece of our community, residing on the doorstep of La Trobe University. The La Trobe School of Cancer Medicine is the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute, who provide vital research, and are located in the ONJ Centre.
Where do I found the daily targets?
The daily targets will be posted the night before on the Facebook event page, as well as the donation page. You will also be able to view the targets when you log in to the Nike Run Club app (you must accept the challenge).
Why is the daily challenge on the NRC app higher than the one posted on the event page?
The NRC only allows for whole km’s, so the daily target will be rounded up to the nearest whole km. You don’t have to complete the rounded-up target; however, it won’t hurt your chances of winning a prize!
I don’t usually run/ walk long distances, is this event suited for me?
Yes, it is. We welcome people with any fitness capacity, whether it is a light walk down the street or a long run around the neighbourhood, every metre counts!
