Following the successful virtual challenges last year in the the Campus-to-Campus Challenge and the Walk and Run Hunt, Team La Trobe set out to create an in-person charity walk and run event in October 2021.
Unfortunately, due to the current circumstances in Victoria, we were unable to go ahead with the event, paving the way for another virtual challenge to keep the community physically active and engaged.
For the month of October, participants will be given a daily walk or run target each day correlating with a cancer statistic. Participants will need to download and register with the Nike Run Club app (on the App Store or Google Play) and send a friend request to Team La Trobe to record the distance they cover each day. La Trobe Sport will then be able to share the progress of the event as well as highlighting the achievements of participants to encourage conversation, motivation and connection.
As part of the challenge, Team La Trobe encourages participants to raise funds for the Olivia Newton John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre, who provide wellness and supportive care programs for cancer patients.
The challenge that is presented by Team La Trobe is timely, as October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While the challenge focuses on all types of cancers, breast cancer is one of Australia’s most common types of cancers and can be treated successfully if found early. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the first week of the challenge will be themed around breast cancer statistics.
The ONJ Cancer Wellness & Research Centre has been a staple piece of our community since 2012 and aims to save the lives of thousands of Australians each year. You can donate to the Team La Trobe fundraising page here.
An ONJ Cancer Wellness & Research Centre Challenge Facebook event page has been created for all participants to join to keep up to date with the daily targets and share their videos and images of their experiences. A range of prizes will be available for participants who are most active in this challenge.
