Team La Trobe gears up for the University Basketball League

Team La Trobe’s preparations for the newly-formed University Basketball League (UBL) have ramped up ahead of the competition’s inaugural season.

La Trobe University is one of eight universities who will battle it out across the UBL’s men's and women's competitions to determine the strongest university basketball team in Australia.

Endorsed by Basketball Australia, administered by UniSport Australia and supported by the participating universities, the inaugural UBL tournament will be played over seven weeks plus finals, with each participating university getting the opportunity to host and livestream matches.

Team La Trobe’s campaign will begin in Perth on Tuesday March 31 when our men’s team faces off against Murdoch University, before both our men’s and women’s take on University of Western Australia the following day.

Team La Trobe’s first home game at the new La Trobe Sports Stadium will be held the following week against University of Technology Sydney on Wednesday April 8, before also hosting Victoria University (Wednesday April 29) and University of Sydney (Wednesday May 20).

La Trobe Sport Representative Sport Coordinator Emily Harbrow said Team La Trobe had assembled a strong set of squads in preparation for the UBL’s first season.

“We have been steadily building towards the opening season of the UBL and we can’t wait for the competition to get underway,” Harbrow said.

“We have assembled a total of 29 students across both the men’s and women’s squads - five of which are from La Trobe’s Bendigo campus - to represent Team La Trobe in the first season of the UBL.

“We have been impressed with not only the quality of the basketballers in our midst, but also their commitment to representing the University in this nation-wide competition.”

To kickstart the team’s preparations, Harbrow said all members from both the men’s and women’s squads attended a compulsory training camp in late February. At the camp, both squads trained on the La Trobe Sports Stadium’s new courts for the first time and heard from the University’s Exercise and Sports Science staff about the benefits of recovery, sleep and nutrition.

“The training camp provided a great chance for the students to come together and begin the process of gelling as a unit under the banner of Team La Trobe, while also tapping into the expertise of our highly-qualified Exercise and Sports Science team,” Harbrow said.

“The plan now is for the teams to train once a week ahead of our trip to Perth for the first game of the competition.

“We would love to see the whole La Trobe community get behind our students as they represent the University on the national stage in this competition and we can’t wait to see the stands at our new La Trobe Sports Stadium full for our first home game against UTS.”

More information on Team La Trobe's first home match at the La Trobe Sports Stadium on April 8 will be made available in the coming weeks.
