Nursing students snapped up into COVID-19 response team

Ten local Nursing students have been employed in Mildura’s COVID-19 Response team.

Sunraysia Community Health Services (SCHS) initiated the Allied Health Assistant roles to expand its workforce.  The students will help staff the drive-through COVID-19 testing clinic that operates from the rear of Mildura Central, as well as the Respiratory Assessment Clinic at SCHS.

Emily Tisler, Bronte Tessier and Georgia Bower began work last week and their first shift was at the Mildura Central drive through site.

“It’s an incredible opportunity and we are all very grateful.  I actually lost my casual job due to COVID-19, so to pick something up, that’s actually in the health field, is a fantastic help to me,” says Emily.

Of the ten students, seven are in the second year of their course and three are third year students.

Simone Heald, CEO of SCHS, says exposing the students to an organisation and its response during a pandemic will be hugely beneficial to their learning.

"Any time we can be bringing students into our workforce is advantageous for us and for them, as it gives them a taste of clinical work.

"It's a win for La Trobe, it's a win for us as an organisation and if young people can study locally - it's a win to be able to keep our families together in Sunraysia."

Deb Neal, Head of Campus, said the University had seen an increase in the number of organisations contacting the university wanting to advertise jobs.

“I am not surprised that our Nursing students have been snapped up in these positions.  Their level of skill and knowledge with regards to health, communication, PPE and patient care – would be a huge advantage.  SCHS are a very supportive partner of La Trobe and it was fantastic for them to advertise the roles to the students.

“More and more employers are contacting us, wanting to take advantage of the talent flowing through.  We’re also offering local industry the chance to showcase their organisations to the entire pool of La Trobe students at every one of our campuses across the state, via interactive, online Career Option panel sessions.”
