After four days of fierce competition, Team La Trobe’s Mixed Netball, Women’s Netball and Men’s Tennis teams all finished with silver medals, which has seen them progress to the top tier competition to be held on the Gold Coast from September 28 – October 3.
The three additional teams promoted means Team La Trobe will now take a squad of more than 150 students to Nationals Division 1.
A further three teams, Men’s Volleyball, Men’s Futsal and Mixed Lacrosse, also enjoyed strong Division 2 campaigns despite narrowly missing making the podium and finishing in fourth place.
In total, La Trobe University sent nine teams to the Division 2 competition; comprising of 75 athletes, four coaches and four staff. The team was made up of students from diverse backgrounds, including representatives from the Bendigo and Mildura regional campuses and athletes who are either international students or living on campus at Bundoora.
Team La Trobe Nationals Division 2 co-captains Adam Currie and Ellen Wright praised the on-field performance and team spirit of the squad on the Gold Coast.
“Overall, Team La Trobe did an incredible job with three teams playing off for gold medals and others improving significantly on their rankings from 2018,” Currie said.
“To have as many teams as we did in medal contention going into the last day was an awesome result, and I think we exceeded results overall in terms of both final placings and team culture.”
Wright added: “It was a privilege to lead Team La Trobe and everyone made it so easy by demonstrating the Team La Trobe atmosphere that we wanted to create.”
“Everyone got around and supported each other and enjoyed the week in a safe and fun environment.”
