Mixing business with friendship

Dr Nicole van der Weerden and Professor Marilyn Anderson are featured in a new book on the unique role of female friendship in successful business partnerships

Dr Nicole van der Weerden and Professor Marilyn Anderson, CEO and CSO of LIMS-embedded biotech Hexima Limited, are featured in a new book on the unique role that female friendship plays in successful business partnerships.

New York-based authors Erica Cerulo and Claire Mazur, founders of fashion and design website Of a Kind, draw on their own experiences and those of other successful partnerships to explore female friendship and collaboration in a feminist reimagining of the workplace.

Their book, Work Wife, is a guide on mixing business with friendship, covering everything from setting expectations to dealing with finances, resolving disagreements and accommodating motherhood.

“We wanted to demonstrate how female partnerships in the office are productive, progressive and empowering,” said Cerulo and Mazur.

For Marilyn Anderson and Nicole van der Weerden, it all comes down to collegiality and mutual respect. “We spent a lot of time together, but it's like everything: You've got to have mutual respect first,” said Anderson. “That's absolutely critical.”

Read: Work Wife, by Erica Cerulo and Claire Mazur is published by Penguin Random House.
