Centre for Global Security
Rethinking Security for a Changing World
Our vision
The La Trobe Centre for Global Security was established to rethink how societies understand and respond to the complex security challenges of our time. Today’s threats - from geopolitical tension and economic instability to climate disruption, information warfare, and public health pressures - demand integrated and multidisciplinary solutions.
We bring together researchers, practitioners, and community partners to generate new ideas that advance scholarship, improve policy, and shape public debate. By working across sectors and disciplines, the Centre shows how national, human, environmental, climate, economic, technological, and informational security are interconnected, and turns this understanding into practical, evidence-based action.
Our mission
We undertake rigorous multidisciplinary research to strengthen public understanding, inform effective policymaking, and help build a more resilient and equitable society in Australia and the world. Through collaborative research, partnerships, and open public dialogue, the Centre supports integrated responses to multidimensional security challenges and contributes to a more secure and resilient future.
Our impact
By working with policymakers, industry, civil society and international partners, we produce research that helps people, communities, and governments navigate growing global uncertainty.
Our work spans diverse areas including maritime security, information integrity, environmental sustainability, and economic resilience, demonstrating how evidence-based approaches address emerging and interconnected risks. This work is not just for scholars and policy makers, advancing public understanding is central to our mission. Drawing on La Trobe Asia’s decade-long program of acclaimed events, podcasts and publications, we help audiences understand global challenges and participate in informed debate.
Australia faces an increasingly complex security environment, where military, economic, climate, health and information risks are deeply intertwined. This Centre positions La Trobe to respond to that reality with evidence-based, multidisciplinary insight.
At a time when the global political environment is increasingly characterised by volatility and uncertainty, the La Trobe Centre for Global Security produces independent, rigorous research that advances policy debates, deepens public understanding, and addresses complex, interconnected security challenges for national and global benefit.
