Library essentials for teaching staff

The La Trobe University (LTU) Library provides programs, services and customised support contributing to student learning success and academic teaching and research outcomes.
How we work
Our Library Learning Services (LLS) team works directly with Subject Coordinators and the La Trobe Education Services team to develop, deliver and evaluate Library research programs constructively aligned with course/subject intended learning outcomes (mapped to the Graduate Capability of Inquiry and Analysis).
We can provide support directly to students as well as in-subject support (for academics) to enhance your content in the Learning Management System (LMS).
Each discipline/School has a specific Senior Learning Librarian assigned that is your primary point of contact to the Library. They bring deep understanding of your disciplinary context and can provide expert guidance on capability development, resource integration and student success strategies aligned with Education2030 objectives.
Services for academic staff
The Library provides a range of services and resources to support and enrich the teaching of your subject.
We work with you from the earliest stages of course development to ensure information literacy, academic skills and research capabilities are systematically embedded across year levels. Our approach ensures constructive alignment with Graduate Attributes and Evidence-based assessment strategies.
We provide the following services:
- Develop, deliver and evaluate Library learning activities constructively aligned to course or subject Intended Learning Outcomes (mapped to Graduate Attributes).
- Identify and advise on relevant and accessible course readings and learning resources.
- Set up your subject reading list in the Talis system with full accessibility and copyright compliance.
- Assessment design support focused on information literacy and academic skills.
- Course review process integration and impact measurement.
Our Librarians can help you find resources for your subject and ensure that your students can access them easily via a subject reading list. We take a 'digital first' approach to our collection, allowing students to access resources regardless of time and location. We also strive to use open access resources, when possible, which helps reduce costs for students and supports equitable and inclusive learning and teaching practices.
Our comprehensive support includes:
- finding and identifying high-quality, discipline-specific resources for your subject
- reading list management through the Talis system with full copyright compliance
- chapter and section scanning—we manage copyright compliance for you
- resource acquisition recommendations and purchase requests for items not in our collections
- Open Educational Resource development through La Trobe eBureau.
We design, deliver and evaluate Library learning activities that are constructively aligned with your Intended Learning Outcomes and mapped to Graduate Attributes, particularly Inquiry and Analysis.
Our services include:
- interactive learning modules and digital content creation
- curriculum-embedded assessment tasks and formative activities
- assessment clarity review through our Peer Learning Advisor team (e.g. student lens feedback on assessment language and rubric accessibility)
- LMS-integrated quizzes and discussion forum management
- subject-specific assessment help guides (e.g. Criminology and Legal Studies)
- online learning resources for embedding in your content.
Comprehensive student success ecosystem
The Library offers extensive support for students, and teaching staff can also request specialised assistance aligned with your subject.
Connect your students with our information literacy specialists and Academic Skills Advisors for targeted, discipline-specific support including research strategies, academic writing, referencing and assessment preparation.
Our specialised hubs provide targeted support for foundational skills critical to student success:
- Maths Hub – Mathematical literacy and problem-solving.
- Science Hub – Scientific inquiry and laboratory skills.
- Coding Hub – Digital literacy and programming skills.
Our Peer Learning Advisors (PLAs) are experienced La Trobe University students specially trained to assist other students with understanding assessments and navigating university life. They offer a collaborative assessment review service grounded in the Students as Partners approach, providing a student lens review of your assessment tasks and rubrics to identify academic jargon and complex instructions that may confuse students.
This service helps ensure all students can clearly understand what's expected of them, reduces student queries and supports equity in learning while maintaining your full control over academic content and rigor.
We offer comprehensive workshops targeting information literacy, academic writing, research skills and digital literacy.
Our team also works with teaching staff to assess whether customised workshops would be appropriate for specific subjects and assessment requirements.
