Windows computer workstations on all three levels have:
- internet access (using Internet Explorer, Firefox or Google Chrome)
- Microsoft 2010 Word, Excel, Access, Publisher and PowerPoint
- EndNote
- SPSS
- VLC media player
- printing access
- DVD ROM and USB 2.0 ports
- headphone/microphone jack
- NVivo is available to use in Collaborative Classroom 2.01 and Training Room 2.02.
Conditions of use:
- You must log in using your university username and password
- You can use the computer for a maximum one hour per computer
- The use of computer facilities is governed by the Use of Computer Facilities Statute 2009.
Specialised equipment
The audiovisual area on level 2 has:
- three audiovisual viewing rooms with combination VHS and DVD players and viewing screens that can connect to a laptop
- microform/microfilm/microfiche viewing machines.
Borrowing a laptop
The Inquiry Desk has five laptops available for students to borrow.
Software and access:
- internet and printing access (instruction sheet is included with each laptop)
- Windows 7
- Internet Explorer and/or Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome
- Adobe Reader
- Microsoft Office 2010 (Word, Excel, Access, Publisher and PowerPoint)
- Microsoft Calendar.
Hardware:
- CD/DVD player (read only)
- sound (via headphones only)
- USB ports.
Frequently asked questions about borrowing a laptop
Who can borrow?
- You can borrow a laptop if you are a La Trobe University student.
- You cannot borrow if you have any outstanding library fines or lost materials.
- You cannot borrow on behalf of someone else.
How do I book?
- Check online if a laptop is available by doing a TITLE search for 'laptop' in the Catalogue.
- You can book one week in advance via the Catalogue or via phone (one booking at a time).
How long can I borrow?
- You can borrow a laptop for up to three hours per day.
- You cannot renew your laptop loan for the day.
Where do I collect the laptop and what comes with it?
- Collect at the Inquiry Desk. You will need to sign a borrower agreement
- Only the laptop is included.
- The power cord and adapter will only be issued when the laptop is low on charge. Do not unplug library equipment to plug in the laptop. Power outlets are available throughout the library.
How do I use the laptop and where do I save my work?
- We do not give instructions on how to use the laptop. We expect you to be familiar with using the hardware and software.
- Save your work to your own memory stick. Do not save your work to the laptop. All student files are automatically erased and cannot be recovered after the laptop is switched off.
Where do I return the laptop and what happens if I return the laptop late?
- Return the laptop to the Inquiry Desk.
- Laptops must be returned 15 minutes before the library closes.
- A fine for late returns will accrue at $2.50 for any time up to the first hour and $1.00 thereafter for each additional hour.
What happens if I lose or damage the laptop?
- You will have signed a borrower agreement before receiving a laptop.
- This agreement outlines that you accept full financial responsibility for the laptop and accessories in any instance of loss, theft or damage. Laptop equipment malfunctions should be reported immediately to library staff.

- There are two A4 scanners on level 2, one with an automatic document feeder.
- A computer connected to the microfilm/microfiche scanner enables you to save, print, edit and email documents stored on microfilm/microfiche.

Catalogue only workstations
- Two computers on level 1 and one computer on level 2 are available for accessing the library catalogue only and have no printing service.
Specialised equipment
- A VCR is available in the audiovisual collection area
- All Group Study Rooms have access to DVD and VCR players with remote controls
- A microform/microfilm/microfiche viewing machine is located on level 1. No printing is available.
