Open research

The Library's ambition is to open the University's research to the world, and the world's knowledge to the University. We support and equip La Trobe scholars to publish, teach and research in open and collaborative ways.

Open access publishing

If an article is published as open access, it means anyone can read it without needing a subscription or making a payment. Open access publishing aims to increase the reach and impact of research by removing access barriers.

Although free for end users, open access doesn't mean there isn't a cost attached to having an article published, as publishers may require payment of a fee, or Article Processing Charge (APC).

If your preferred journal uses APCs, you may be eligible for a discount or waiver under Read and Publish agreements negotiated by the Library and the Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL).

Choosing where and how to publish

There are many options for publishing your article open access, but it can be confusing. The Library has prepared a guide that can help you make a decision.
