Library conditions of entry
The Library is a study space for all.
To maintain a respectful, safe and inclusive environment for study and research, all Library users must comply with the following conditions.
Respectful conduct
- Treat Library staff and other users with dignity and respect. Any abusive, threatening, violent or disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated.
- Follow all reasonable directions given by Library and Security staff – failure to do so may result in removal from the Library.
Noise and mobile devices
- Library spaces are designed to support different modes of study and are signposted accordingly. Please be aware of the space you are working in and be respectful of others.
- Loud behaviour may result in you being asked to move to another space or to leave.
- Set mobile phones and devices to silent or vibrate mode. Phone conversations are to be at a low volume and are not permitted in quiet areas.
- Use headphones at a volume that cannot be heard by others. Do not use speakers.
- Filming that captures any identifiable faces or disrupts other Library users is not permitted without written permission from the Library.
- All recording and photography must comply with the Library Recording and Photography policies [PDF 88KB].
Personal belongings
- Please always keep personal belongings with you or in one of the secure lockers where provided.
- Unattended personal items may be treated as lost property and removed to a secure location.
- The Library is not responsible for loss or damage to personal property.
- Food and drink (no alcohol) is permitted in the Library, with all rubbish to be disposed of in the bins provided.
- Personal devices must be safe and appropriately maintained, with no exposed wires or compromised batteries.
- Ensure belongings and cables do not obstruct walkways, doorways or exits.
- For safety reasons, all vehicles, including bikes, scooters and battery-powered devices, must not be driven, parked, stored or charged inside Library facilities. Mobility aids are welcome.
Safety and wellbeing
- La Trobe University campuses are smoke-free. Smoking and vaping are prohibited in all Library spaces.
- Children under the age of 12 years old must always be supervised by a responsible adult. Unattended children may be referred to appropriate authorities.
- For your own safety and the comfort of other visitors, sleeping in the Library for an extended period is not permitted.
Use of Library resources
- Materials must be borrowed according to Library procedures before being taken out of the Library.
- Users must comply with copyright laws and any special restrictions on materials.
- Damage or defacement of Library materials is prohibited and may incur charges.
- Library equipment and devices are not to be moved or altered in any way and must always remain plugged in and connected, including staff workstation devices.
Permissions and approvals
- Photography, filming and display of notices require prior approval from Library management.
- Only authorised notices may be displayed in designated areas.
- Excessive movement of furniture is not permitted.
Compliance
- For the safety and security of users, staff and Library resources, CCTV surveillance operates throughout Library facilities, and footage may be reviewed in accordance with University privacy policies and applicable laws.
- Users must follow all applicable laws, policies, signage and directions from Library staff.
- Non-compliance may result in temporary or permanent loss of access to Library facilities and services.
- Serious breaches may be referred under University misconduct processes.
