Learning and teaching pathways and opportunities

We have strong, transparent pathways for career development and programs in place to scaffold the process.

Our La Trobe Learning and Teaching (LTLT) programs [staff login required] provide evidence-based professional development opportunities designed to assist in staff progression. These include the Graduate Certificate of Higher Education as well as programs that cover the basics, subject improvement and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Advance your career in learning and teaching

Some of our key career pathways for teaching academics include:

HEA Fellowships

We hold an institutional partnership with the UK’s Advance Higher Education (AHE). AHE champions excellence in teaching and learning support through its internationally-endorsed framework.

Through our La Trobe Academy, we offer a range of AHE-accredited professional learning pathways that lead to professional recognition (HEA Fellowships) for staff. The globally recognised and transportable HEA Fellowships are open to academic and professional staff who teach or provide learning support.

Teaching focussed staff

For academic staff wanting to focus solely on their teaching career, teaching focussed academic positions provide a position with no research output expectation. These roles are not limited to the classroom and can contribute to teaching excellence and the student experience through learning and teaching leadership and curriculum development.

Current staff can access more information on these roles on our staff intranet [Staff login required].

Our Academic Promotions process ensures there are clear recognition and reward pathways for teachers and teaching focused staff.

Teaching awards

We regularly reward and recognise our teaching staff through College and University-level teaching awards.

Our Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Awards recognise academic and professional staff who have made outstanding contributions to student learning over a sustained period at La Trobe.

La Trobe Learning and Teaching (LTLT) offers support in preparing for the Vice-Chancellor teaching awards, the Australian Awards for University Teaching and other awards and grants.

Both Colleges recognise and reward teaching staff through their local Teaching Awards. These awards recognise excellent teaching and teaching support activities by individuals and teams.
