Develop the skills needed to conduct effective and systematic literature searches in health databases. Learn how to develop a research question, build a search strategy and use advanced database searching techniques across platforms such as Medline, CINAHL and Web of Science.

This workshop is delivered in six parts.

Part 1: Developing a Research Question

In this section [04:20 mins], you will learn how to:

  • understand the purpose of systematic searching and its role in evidence-based practice
  • develop a focused and searchable research question using mnemonic frameworks such as PICO
  • break down a clinical scenario into key concepts to begin building a search strategy.
Part 2: Search Strategy and Keywords

In this section [03:10 mins], you will learn how to:

  • identify key concepts and develop a keyword search strategy
  • expand your search using synonyms, truncation, wildcards and phrase searching
  • combine search terms effectively using Boolean operators such as AND and OR.
Part 3: Health Databases and Subject Headings

  • identify appropriate health databases and understand the importance of reproducible searching
  • use subject headings, keywords and database search features to improve search precision
  • apply techniques such as exploding subject headings and using filters effectively in systematic search.
Part 4: Medline

  • search Medline using both subject headings and keyword searching techniques
  • combine concepts and synonyms using operators such as AND, OR, truncation and adjacency searching
  • organise, refine and save a systematic search strategy for exporting and reviewing results.
Part 5: CINAHL

  • search CINAHL using subject headings and advanced keyword searching techniques
  • combine synonyms and concepts using Boolean, proximity, truncation and phrase searching operators
  • save, refine and export search results when conducting a systematic search.
Part 6: Web of Science

  • search Web of Science using advanced keyword searching techniques
