Help shape the future of La Trobe by bringing your student perspective to the La Trobe University Council.
Nominations are now open for two student member positions on the University Council:
• Undergraduate student member
• Postgraduate student member
The successful candidates will serve a one-year term, from 1 January to 31 December 2027.
What is the University Council?
The University Council is La Trobe’s governing body. It oversees the University’s overall direction, governance and performance.
Its responsibilities include:
• Appointing and monitoring the performance of the Vice-Chancellor
• Approving the University’s mission, strategic direction, annual budget and business plan
• Monitoring risk
• Overseeing academic activities
• Approving significant University commercial activities
Council members include the Chancellor, the Hon. John Brumby AO, Vice-Chancellor Professor Theo Farrell, government appointees, Council appointees, La Trobe staff and elected student members.
Who should nominate as a student member?
You don’t need to have been involved in student politics to nominate. What matters is the perspective and experience you can bring to Council.
For example you might:
• Have contributed to a student advisory group.
• Worked as a Peer Learning Advisor.
• Been involved in a club or society.
• Be an engaged student who understands the experiences and priorities of your fellow students.
• Be studying at a regional campus and want to share a regional student perspective.
What is the role of a student member?
As a student member, you’ll contribute an important student perspective to Council discussions and decision-making.
While elected student members bring their experience as students to Council, they do not formally represent or act as delegates for the students who elected them. Like all Council members, they are required by law to act in the best interests of the University as a whole.
How do I nominate?
If you are interested in nominating, read the information on the Council Elections webpage and complete the online nomination form.
Nominations close at 12.00pm on Tuesday, 8 September 2026.
What happens next?
If more than one eligible nomination is received for either position, an election will be held online through a third-party voting provider. Eligible students will be advised of the voting process and next steps.
