Melbourne Cup public holiday

Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 7 November 2023, will be recognised by the University as a public holiday.

Although Melbourne Cup Day is a metropolitan-based public holiday, regional campuses will also observe this holiday.

As a result, all campuses will be closed and any examinations scheduled on Melbourne Cup Day will be rescheduled.

Melbourne Cup Day and other public holidays are being negotiated by the University and the  National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) as part of a new University staff Enterprise Agreement (EA).

The proposed EA includes additional holidays for staff, including Melbourne Cup Day, which are supported by the NTEU.

While the negotiations for the new EA have not yet concluded, the Melbourne Cup public holiday will be observed as a University Holiday to provide certainty about public holidays for the remainder of 2023.

The University will also observe the AFL Grand Final public holiday on Friday 29 September.

You can view University Holidays and other important dates such as census dates in the academic calendar. Visit the what public holidays are observed by the University FAQ for more information.
