Your role in making La Trobe a safer community

At La Trobe, you have the right to academic freedom – to explore ideas, express your views and pursue knowledge in a respectful and safe environment.

However, with freedom comes responsibility. It’s important to understand your rights, know how to protect them and recognise when something isn’t right.

Academic freedom and why your behaviour matters

Academic freedom is your right to:

  • Express your ideas and opinions openly and respectfully
  • Engage in your studies without external pressure or manipulation
  • Expect your personal information and academic work to remain secure
  • Seek support and advice without fear of reprisal or intimidation

Being part of a respectful academic community means maintaining high standards of behaviour.  As a La Trobe student, you are expected to:

  • Treat others with respect, regardless of differences in opinion, background or identity
  • Avoid any behaviour that could be seen as bullying, harassment, discrimination or intimidation
  • Engage in academic discussions constructively and respectfully
  • Support a safe and inclusive learning environment for everyone
