During the lecture, she will discuss why mathematics remains a foundational skill for students and what can be done to strengthen learning outcomes across schools and communities.

The event will also be hosted by Professor Joanna Barbousas, Pro Vice-Chancellor Education Impact and Innovation and Dean of La Trobe’s School of Education, providing attendees with the opportunity to hear directly from leaders helping shape the future of education in Australia.

Professor Joanna Barbousas

Mathematics achievement is receiving growing attention across Australia. Recent international testing highlighted the scale of the challenge, with almost half of Australia’s 15-year-olds failing to meet national mathematics standards. These results have reinforced the importance of equipping future teachers with effective, evidence-based approaches to teaching mathematics.

La Trobe University is helping address these challenges through its Science of Mathematics Education (SOME) Lab, which focuses on improving mathematics outcomes through evidence-informed teaching and learning practices.

The SOME Lab supports research, professional learning and innovation in mathematics education, helping ensure future educators are equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to make a meaningful impact in the classroom.
