Transforming family-centred mental health care
Today, long wait times and limited access leave many families without the mental health care they urgently need. This issue is even more prevalent in First Nations communities.
La Trobe’s Bouverie Centre has created a scalable solution, adapting their successful Walk in Together family therapy service.
Walk in Together Clinic
The Bouverie Centre is the world’s largest specialist family therapy centre. In response to overwhelming demand for timely mental health services during the COVID-19 pandemic – they created a 90 minute, online, single session family therapy service called Walk in Together.
This model was incredibly successful and in high demand, so Bouverie saw fit to extend the service, with an additional provision for First Nations families.
Workin’ With The Mob
Developed in partnership with First Nations community, the Bouverie Centre is working to deliver a new culturally safe, responsive and scalable family therapy service for First Nations Families – Workin’ with the Mob Walk in Together clinic.
Workin’ With The Mob is a single-session, family therapy clinic that reduces wait times, removes barriers, and respects cultural values. Two therapists – one First Nations and one non-First Nations – work with families to identify goals and provide support. 85% of families reported immediate benefit from the clinics, and around 60% required no further treatment (Hartley 2023).
This service will be a first in Australia, embedding First Nations cultural wisdoms for both First Nations and non-First Nations families who choose to opt-in.
