How to leave your gift
Leaving a gift to us in your Will is a way to safeguard the future you care about most. Here are the steps you can take to ensure your legacy with La Trobe.
The choice on how to leave your legacy is a significant one. We welcome you to discuss your interests with us and invite you to engage with our staff to explore how your gift can be impactful and effective. Our role is to help you feel informed and confident in your choice.
Many of our supporters choose to structure gifts in their Will to support our main areas of focus.
- Option A: Support the area of greatest impact
Supporting an area of greatest impact is the way you can help where it's needed the most. Your gift will be distributed to the area identified as having the greatest impact at the time it’s received, ensuring the vitality and wellbeing of Australians for generations to come. - Option B: Expand access to education
Help us nurture the brightest students across all social, geographic and cultural backgrounds. Your gift can provide students from disadvantaged backgrounds with access to scholarships, bursaries or prizes to help them access education and thrive. - Option C: Enable bold research
Our mission at La Trobe is to lead the way in developing creative and innovative responses to the biggest challenges facing the world today. A gift to La Trobe’s research focus areas can accelerate outcomes with local and global significance.
There are a number of ways you can structure the gift in your Will to La Trobe to ensure that your loved ones are looked after while delivering the legacy you'd like to leave behind.
We recommend you also seek the professional advice of a legal advisor and consult with your loved ones when preparing your Will. This will help ensure your wishes are articulated clearly in your Will and can be carried out as intended when your Will comes into effect.
There are three options for structuring your gift:
- A residual gift. A residual gift can be all or a portion of what is left over in your estate after specific gifts, debts, expenses and estate administration. Residual gifts are a way to ensure your gift retains its value over time, and provides for your loved ones as you wish.
- Whole or part of your estate. You can leave your entire estate or a portion of it to La Trobe University.
- A specific gift. You can leave any identifiable property as a gift in your Will to La Trobe University. For example, a specific gift may include a defined sum of money, shareholdings, artwork or real estate.
It's important that the purpose of your gift is articulated in your Will so your gift can be distributed and expended according to your wishes.
While La Trobe University is unable to offer legal advice or draft your Will, we can help by providing suggested wording as guidance for you to discuss with your legal advisor.
We also highly recommend you discuss your wishes with your family and loved ones so they understand and uphold your wishes when your Will comes into effect.
