Standing together – National Day of Mourning

On Thursday, 22 January, La Trobe University will join organisations across Australia flying flags at half-mast to honour the lives lost from the devastating terrorist attack at Bondi Beach.

This is a difficult time for many, and we want to acknowledge the grief this may bring.

If you are feeling overwhelmed or simply need someone to talk to, please reach out to our Wellbeing Services team. The team offers free counselling, wellbeing resources and a safe, confidential space to share what’s on your mind.

More information is available on our wellbeing website or people can access out-of-hours support by calling 1300 146 307 or texting 0488 884 100 (5pm – 9am weekdays, 24 hours on weekends and public holidays).

As part of paying tribute to the 15 people who lost their lives in the December attack, a minute’s silence will be held at 7.01pm (AEDT).

People can also leave a candle on their doorsteps or windows as a symbol of remembrance, mourning and solidarity with the Jewish community.

It is also suggested people carry out the Jewish tradition of Mitzvah, or an act of kindness, in honour of the Bondi victims. This can be as simple as volunteering, checking in on a neighbour or donating to those in need.

Together, we can ensure light will always triumph over darkness.
