Men’s wellbeing: Staying on track during exams

The Men’s Health and Wellbeing program is one of the specialist services at Student Health, Wellbeing & Inclusion, aimed at supporting the diverse needs of our students.

One way this program supports students we see is by helping them stay strong, focused and mentally healthy during high-pressure times like exams.

Exams can be demanding — but they’re also an opportunity to take care of yourself in ways that support your focus, performance and wellbeing. Self-care is about giving yourself the energy and mindset to stay on track.

Looking after yourself matters

When things get busy, it’s easy to slip into habits like skipping meals, cutting back on sleep, or disconnecting from others. But these are the times when looking after yourself really counts.

Here are some practical strategies for staying steady and well during exam time:

Keep active – go to the gym, head out for a walk or stretch between study blocks. Movement clears your head and reduces stress.
Fuel yourself – eat regularly, drink plenty of water, and aim for consistent sleep. A steady routine supports better focus and motivation.
Stay connected – whether it’s chatting with friends, studying with others or just having a break together, connection matters.
Take meaningful breaks – short pauses with music, sport, or something you enjoy can help your brain reset and recharge.
Watch your inner dialogue – be kind to yourself. Exams are tough and self-compassion helps you stay focused and motivated.
Reach out if you need to – seeking support is part of looking after yourself. If you feel you are getting behind, struggling or finding it hard going….reach out.

Looking after your wellbeing doesn’t take away from your goals — it strengthens your ability to reach them.
