Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) can happen anywhere, anytime. Learn how to save a life at the upcoming La Trobe Defib Ready presentation being held at our Bendigo campus and online on Wednesday 23 July 2025.
We have defibrillators (AEDs – Automated External Defibrillators) located at all La Trobe campuses. It’s important that as many of our staff and students know where the units are and how to use them. It’s also important to know how to recognise and successfully treat a Sudden Cardiac Arrest and feel safe using AEDs.
Our guest presenter, Carpet Hughes, is a registered intensive care paramedic (MICA) with more than 30 years of identifying, treating and saving victims from Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Carpet will be here to share his knowledge on how you can save someone – even before the local ambulance arrives.
Come along and learn the following:
- What is the difference between heart attack and Sudden Cardiac Arrest?
- How do we identify and manage a SCA?
- How do we help someone experiencing SCA?
- What do you do when SCA strikes in your home, gym, school, workplace or in the street?
- What is a defibrillator (or you may hear it called an AED – Automated External Defibrillator)?
- How do we use an AED?
- Can I get a shock from an AED?
- What about using an AED on a patient who has a pacemaker?
- And what is YOUR Emergency Response Plan – using the DRSABCD resuscitation action plan
All of the above and a lot more questions will be answered for you at the Defib Ready presentation!
