Achol Arok, a journalism graduate from La Trobe University, credits her Access Scholarship with helping her manage the financial pressures of university life.
“The scholarship really helped alleviate some of the financial stress around transport and the technology needed for studies,” she says. “It was a security net.”
Achol balanced study with casual work and long commutes from Melbourne’s western suburbs. She says the scholarship made a real difference, especially during internships and exam periods when work hours were limited.
“Honestly, the application process was so simple,” she adds. “It’s not as inaccessible as some might think.”
Achol started her career at the ABC, having started with an internship and later landing a role on the Breakfast show and still works in journalism today as a reporter at The Guardian Australia.
Her advice for prospective students? “Don’t focus solely on your ATAR. No matter what circumstances you’re in, there’s a scholarship that fits your needs.”
