Art History Chapter

The Art History Alumni Chapter was formed by graduates of La Trobe's Art History program. Anyone with an interest in art is welcome to join, particularly current and former La Trobe Visual Arts students.

The chapter organises an annual program of activities including visits to artists' studios and workshops, lectures by art historians, visits to public and private galleries, discussions with art industry experts, and social gatherings with fellow members.

The chapter also raises funds to support art, and art students, at La Trobe.

The chapter has previously awarded the following annual prizes.

  • The First Year Alumni Prize of $500 was awarded to Lexi Thomas
  • The 2020 Art History Alumni Chapter and La Trobe Art Institute Visual Arts Prize

In consultation with Bala Starr, Director of the LAI, her deputy Karen Annett-Thomas and Kylie Banyard of the Department of Creative Arts and English at Bendigo campus, it was decided that this will no longer be an Acquisitive Award but will instead consist of the $1,000 gift from the Art History Alumni Chapter and a year-long mentorship from a senior curator at the LAI. The recipient of this new award for 2020 was Rachel Claire.

This Prize is awarded to a third-year or Honours visual arts student enrolled in the Bachelor of Creative Arts (Visual Arts) at the Bendigo campus as an acknowledgement of their achievements. With this prize the Art History Alumni Chapter and LAI aims to provide a Visual Arts student with tangible support for their future career aspirations. The aim of the mentorship is to support the student’s [artist’s] career development, enhance their professional growth and provide networking opportunities.

During 2017, La Trobe University’s Art History Alumni Chapter gathered data and oral histories to create an online historical record of Art History at La Trobe.

Over La Trobe’s 50-year history, the Art History department has produced many world class curators, educators, researchers and writers.

This project was supported by a grant from the Pitch Your Project committee for the 50 Years of La Trobe Celebrations. The history has been researched and written by Livia Kenney.

We'd love to hear about your experience of Art History at La Trobe. To add to the story, or for any amendments, email us.
