Dr Inga Clendinnen AO, FAHA

Emeritus Scholar, La Trobe

Writer, academic and historian

Dr Inga Clendinnen was a writer, academic and historian whose work on Aztec, Mayan cultures and the Holocaust have been praised around the world.

Inga began as a lecturer at La Trobe in 1969 and stayed in the role until 1982, when she was promoted to senior lecturer in History.

In 1991, she was forced to put her career on hold due to illness. However, Inga retained her connection with the university, as she was appointed an Emeritus Scholar at La Trobe.

It was at La Trobe that Inga was thoroughly delving into research that eventually led to an impressive list of accolades.

“I had taken to exploring Aztec and the Mayan civilisations,” Inga said.

“I won the major prizes being offered in America for my first book. I absolutely believe that was because of the cross-fertilization that went on between me and my fellow teachers at La Trobe.

“La Trobe has still been an excellent and expansive experience.”
