Support new students and become a mentor this semester

Are you looking for a meaningful way to give back, build leadership skills and make a real difference at uni? Becoming a Mentor in the La Trobe Leaders Program is a great way to do all of that, and more!

We’re now calling for mentor registrations for Semester 2 and we are searching for mentors across our Melbourne and regional campuses.

What kind of mentoring is this?

This is transition mentoring – focused on helping new students adjust to university life. It’s not about tutoring or academic support. Instead, you’ll offer guidance on things like settling in, navigating La Trobe systems, finding resources, building social connections and understanding how things work at uni.

Why become a Mentor?

Being a mentor is about offering a friendly hand to someone who’s just starting (or restarting) their university journey. You’ll be matched with a new student (a mentee) who may be feeling uncertain about uni life – and your experience, advice and encouragement can help them feel supported and more confident.

But it’s not just about helping others, mentors gain a lot too:

  • Boost your communication and leadership skills – valuable for any career path
  • Develop your confidence in guiding and supporting others
  • Connect with new people and expand your university network
  • Get recognition for your volunteer contribution – great for your CV, scholarship applications or future leadership roles

You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to be willing to listen, share what you’ve learned so far, and be a friendly support for someone else starting their journey at La Trobe.
