Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a global movement that invites us to rethink assumptions and stereotypes about how people think, learn and experience the world. It is about recognising the value of diverse minds and creating environments where everyone feels respected, supported and celebrated.
What is ‘Neurodiversity’ and ‘Neurodivergence’?
‘Neurodiversity’ is a term that acknowledges that everyone has different ways of thinking, processing information and communicating. ‘Neurodivergence’ is a term for those people who identify as ‘neurodivergent’. It is not a diagnosis but those affected may have a diagnosis of (or self-identify with) autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette syndrome, dyscalculia or developmental language disorder.
People who are neurodivergent sometimes find it hard to navigate systems and institutions because they are often built by and for neurotypical people. Many organisations, like La Trobe, are trying to remove some of those barriers to success for neurodivergent people (hooray!).
