LTSA – What do we do?

LTSA work hard to make student life better! We provide outstanding student support and services for La Trobe Students on all campuses. We are funded by your SSAF (Student Services and Amenities Fee), a compulsory fee charged to La Trobe Uni students to fund non-academic services and amenities.


So what are we doing with your money?

We are providing Advocacy.

LTSA’s advocates support students’ university wide with any issues they may have with the university for example; misconduct allegations, attending hearings, accommodation concerns, remission of debt, special consideration, review and re-mark of assessment, placement issues, general admin and more.

They can also assist with non-Uni related problems as well like making referrals, liaising with people on your behalf and helping you access information. This service is confidential and independent of the university. Our average wait time for advocacy services is 2 days maximum. Where possible, we see students on the same day.

In the short time that LTSA have been in operation, our Advocates have been involved with 319 cases and have accrued 660 recorded hours of time working with or on behalf of students (the total number of appointments is 896). We’ve attended over 90 hearings.

We are providing a Legal Service.

The LTSA Legal Service, through its partnership with West Heidelberg Community Legal, offers students free legal support from professional lawyers. Issues that we can help with include tenancy problems, dealing with fines, employment, Centrelink disputes, safety and crime, insurance disputes etc. This service is run in conjunction with Banyule Community Health and, like all our services, is provided in a confidential and judgement free environment.

We are supporting our Student Councils

LTSA is governed by an elected student Governing Board of Directors.  Our next election period is coming up soon. Nominations open on the 23 of August and close on the 3rd of September. We have positions available on all of our campuses and are introducing a new Student Council for our online cohort. Student Council reps attend an induction retreat where they receive governance training. We provide them with ongoing support, guidance and mentorship.

We support International Students

LTSA welcomes all international students studying on-shore and off-shore. Whether you form part of our metro, regional or online campus communities, LTSA is here for you. We value highly the contributions that our amazing, diverse and culturally rich international students bring to the life and fabric of our student association, and we understand the unique challenges and opportunities our international students face. LTSA has a member of our team dedicated to creating, fostering and enhancing your experience, as well as offering a range of services and support to make your time at LTU successful, enjoyable and inclusive.

We are providing Food Relief.

We have food relief available to every LTU Student. Options vary depending on the organisations we are working with on each campus. In the last two weeks alone, LTSA staff have distributed over 1200 kgs of food to students from Bendigo. This is not only feeding our students and their families but has also stopped over a tonne of food going into landfill.

For metro students, we are affiliated with Two Birds, One Scone. A registered charity set up by an LTU student dedicated to providing food relief to those who need it. We have similar relationships with FoodShare, Sunraysia Mallee Ethnic Communities Council Inc (SMECC), New Life Christian Church (NLCC) and Community Food Relief Services.

We are providing Financial Counselling.

The LTSA Financial Counselling Service provides support for students with their financial concerns. Our professional Financial Counsellor can assist with a wide range of issues including budgeting, debt/loan negotiations, rental concerns and Centrelink problems. The wait time for this service is usually only one day. This service is run by fully qualified Financial Counsellors.

We are running a Clubs and Societies Program

Some of our clubs are course-based, others have absolutely nothing to do with uni at all, but all of them are run by passionate students who want to connect with like-minded peers.  With 49 Clubs and Societies across all campuses, there really is something for everyone.  Clubs are supported by a dedicated team who administer funding, assist with planning your events, as well as providing a number of training opportunities throughout the year.

We support Student Theatre and Film

LTSA is proud to support Student Theatre & Film in 2021, even when the University are teaching out its Theatre and Screen disciplines. LTSA has continued to support the STF program, increasing funding and staffing in mid-2021 to build on the success and reach of the program. The LTSA team within STF and the dedicated and passionate STF students have seen the staging of five productions on campus and 14 standalone events in semester one.

We organize Events

We are committed to providing a wide range of events to suit every student. The majority of events have been online due to COVID however we are looking forward to running face to face events when we are able. We regularly run online yoga and meditation as part of our well-being offering. We offer trivia nights, parties, day trips and celebrate calendar events like Pride week and NAIDOC week.
