This course is designed for secondary teachers - and is also suitable for allied health professionals and parents who want to understand more about the Science of Language and Reading as this pertains to secondary students.  
 
It is designed to improve your understanding of the reading process, how oral language, reading, and writing link to each other, and how to support students’ ongoing oral language and literacy skills across the curriculum.  It will provide you with knowledge and skills needed for implementation in your classroom.

Course content

Topics covered include:  

  • What is reading?  Unpacking the reading process and why it is challenging for some students.
  • What is writing? Unpacking the writing process and why it is challenging for some students.
  • Building vocabulary skills for success across the curriculum.
  • Managing cognitive load and behavioural/emotional responses when working with struggling secondary students. 

 

This course is delivered by La Trobe University SOLAR Lab Directors; Professor Pamela Snow and Professor Tanya Serry. 

 

About the La Trobe SOLAR Lab 
The SOLAR Lab was established in the School of Education at La Trobe University in 2020 to promote the scientific study of the role of oral language skills in the emergence and consolidation of reading skills across the school years (pre-school to secondary). We use the term “reading” to specifically identify core skills in text decoding and language comprehension that also promote success in writing and spelling. 

 

You’ll learn:

  • To understand why the reading process is challenging for some students. 
  • To explore the properties of writing, and the principles of teaching writing explicitly and systematically  
    build vocabulary skills for success across the curriculum.
  • The principles of how we process and learn information while simultaneously, taking cognitive load into account. 
  • About the short and the longer term consequences for students who have poor literacy proficiency. 

Your study experience

Delivered online over four 1.5-hour weekly webinars, you will have the opportunity to engage with our subject matter experts for detailed responses, and access learning resources, discussion forums, and practical tools to support you in applying the techniques learned in the webinar.  

 

The total time commitment will be up to 12 hours. 
 
Following each online session, you'll be able to access learning resources and practical tools to support you in applying the techniques learned in the seminar, the online weekly sessions are recorded and available as synchronous or asynchronous presentations.  You can also choose to undertake self-assessment quizzes to track your learning process and understanding.   

At the conclusion, you will receive a Certificate of Attendance for 6 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). 

 

Who you'll learn from

Professor Pamela Snow

In 2020, Pamela established, with her colleague, Professor Tanya Serry, the Science of Language and Reading (SOLAR) Lab in the School of Education at La Trobe University. The SOLAR Lab is a platform for research, teaching, advocacy and postgraduate supervision on a wide range of topics pertaining to developmental language and the transition to reading, writing and spelling in the school years. The SOLAR Lab was a finalist in the 2022 Australian Financial Review higher education awards in the Community Engagement category. 

Vanessa Rohlf 

Vanessa is a Research Officer in the School of Psychology and Public Health, and is a consultant, therapist, and educator specialising in compassion fatigue, stress management, pet loss, and animal bereavement.

Professor Tanya Serry 

In 2020, Tanya co-founded the SOLAR Lab (Science of Language and Reading) with Professor Pamela Snow in the School of Education at La Trobe University. The SOLAR Lab is a platform for research, teaching, advocacy and postgraduate supervision on a wide range of topics pertaining to developmental language and the transition to reading, writing and spelling in the school years. I have paid the fee for a short course. When will I have access to the course?  

Access to courses is generally available two weeks in advance of the scheduled course start date, or as advised in the registration confirmation email.  Course materials are made available via our Learning Management System (LMS) for which you will be provided with your username and initial password.

I need to defer my registration. How do I go about this? 

Prior to your course commencing, you may request a deferral of your registration to the next available course date, by contacting executive_professional_education@latrobe.edu.au.
