This subject will introduce students to more advanced aspects of molecular genetics and analysis, including genomics and DNA sequencing; analysis of gene expression, and proteomics. The emphasis is on the genome as a whole, rather than at the level of the gene.

01. Explain the methodology used in DNA recombinant technology and how it can be applied in biomedical research.

Activities:
Sequencing methodologies will be presented in lectures and reinforced in tutorials.Understanding will be assessed in the mid-semester and final examinations.

02. Describe the approaches used to sequence single genes and whole genomes, and the methods used in genetic mapping.

03. Explain the methodology for the assessment of gene expression and describe how these techniques can be applied in biomedical research..

04. Explain the methodology for the separation, purification and identification of cellular proteins and describe how these techniques can be applied in biomedical research.

Activities:
Protein purification methods and processes involved in assessing protein function will be presented in lectures and reinforced in tutorials. Understanding will be assessed in the mid-semester and final examinations.

05. Collaborate effectively with peers to investigate and report on 'cutting edge' biotechnological techniques

Activities:
The assignment will assess the information-gathering process by being marked against a rubric.
