The Academic Board is the primary body for academic governance and decision-making at the University. The Board is established under legislation and provides advice to the Vice-Chancellor and University Council on issues that affect academic excellence.
Its responsibilities
It provides a forum for information and debate within the University and is responsible for policy on matters such as admissions, assessment, teaching, student conduct, research and academic promotion. It reports directly to Council.
The membership
The Academic Board includes senior academic leaders of the University, elected staff members and student representatives. The president of the student union, association or representative body of each campus (or their nominee) is a member of the board, as well as five student members and one higher degree by research candidate who are elected annually.
Who can be a student member?
It’s not a prerequisite to be involved in student politics to become a member. If you’ve been on a student advisory group, a Peer Learning Advisor or just an engaged student at a regional campus who wants to make sure the voices of your peers are heard, then you can join the Academic Board.
What is the role of a student member?
As a member of Academic Board, you will join in on the discussion and debates for policy on matters such as admissions, assessment, teaching, student conduct, research and research training.
The Term of Office for Academic Board is twelve months and will commence from 1 January 2026. Successful candidates will be inducted, and provided with information and mentorship support ahead of their first meeting.
What’s the nomination process?
If you are interested in nominating for one of the positions on Academic Board you will need to complete the online nomination form by 5.00pm Thursday 2 October 2025.
If more than one nomination is received for any of the positions then an election will be necessary. It will be held online via a third-party vendor. In that event, students will be advised as to the next steps.
