Cheating services are targeting students – how to stay safe

We’re aware that some commercial academic cheating services are approaching students both online and in person to promote their services.

Illegal cheating services (sometimes also called contract cheating services) sell students essays or assignments, or accept payment for someone to sit exams on a student’s behalf.

Some of these illegal services market aggressively through social media, email and even on campus.

Recently reported academic cheating service activities include:

  • Trying to collect student contact details or encourage students to sign up for their services on the spot.
  • Pressuring students who have previously used these services to recruit others, sometimes using threats or blackmail.
  • Infiltrating study groups via messaging apps and social media platforms.
  • Offering incentives or making it seem “quick and easy” to sign up.

Why this matters

Using academic cheating services isn’t just against University academic integrity rules, it can put you at serious personal risk. Students who engage with these services can be at risk of:

  • Identity theft
  • Blackmail or threats for more money, information or class materials
  • Cybersecurity risks
